![]() After we made our first drop off we started making collections from our customers. On the day myself and Anthony Lee left the Penrose depot with a van full of donation from the staff alone. We got all staff and Post Haste Auckland customers involved by donating goods. They pick up and return the donations to the shed where they pack food pods, sort through clothing, test all electronic components etc. They are not government funded so the team has to work around their daily jobs. Evelyn runs the West Auckland base with the help of a few volunteers. The Koha Shed was founded by Sherron Sunnex and Meegan Manuka. It is a place free of judgment and negativity. The Koha Shed is a place where anyone can go to when in need. I learnt of the difficulties the SPCA had clearing the food donation bins from local supermarkets and from this we plan to continue helping by organising our couriers to clear these bins and deliver the donations up to the SPCA giving them one less thing to worry about so they can focus on what’s most important, helping lost or neglected animals and finding them loving new homes (sadly not mine), especially when kitten seasons comes around in November. Thankfully there weren’t too many animals in the shelter so most of the work was just cleaning and restocking food in the morning, otherwise, a lot of the day was spent keeping some quarantine strays company as well as those ready for adoption, making fuzzy friends (terribly difficult to not end up going home with them all)! I chose the SPCA, mostly for my love of animals, but also to learn more about them to see if there was any way we could do more to help. In the afternoon I got to walk one of the dogs, and just helped with general office work to help the staff. The volunteers do all of the cleaning and feeding for the animals, so the staff do not have to worry. I got to clean cat and kitten cages, x2 chook pens and x2 rabbit pens. This included cleaning litter trays and handling animals. The SPCA has specific areas for each step of their adoption process, to ensure the animals they are adopting out, are healthy. On the day, the morning consisted of cleaning and feeding the animals. SPCA is not subsidised by the government and workers on minimum wages to reduce the costs of running it.Busy period is summertime - when most of the volunteers are required and also breeding season - mother cats share with babies etc. ![]() Animals are given donated toys when adopted. The SPCA work closely with poly tech and schools for volunteers – to give people experience in the area. Some animals are fostered to families to help give the animals social skills and then are given back for adoption. All animals are checked up and monitored by the staff.A lot of people who help to upkeep the general tidiness are volunteers who have 2 shifts for volunteers - morning and afternoon. All animals found are recorded where they are found and who has found them.
